Wood lathes date from about 1300 BC. The Egyptians first developed a two-person lathe, where one person would turn the wood with a rope while another form of wood with a sharpened tool. The Romans later perfected the machine by turning the bow. Later in the Middle ages a pedal replaced the rotating bow and allowed one person to operate the lathe, the pedal is still used to some extent in third world countries.
Machines have continued to evolve over the centuries using animal power, water power, steam power and electricity. Today we are fortunate to have a variety of variable speed lathes and sizes, from small bench lathes for large machines that will turn objects up to 24″ in diameter and larger, but used, as a rule, for commercial application.
