Wood machines and tools

Wood lathes date from about 1300 BC. The Egyptians first developed a two-person lathe, where one person would turn the wood with a rope while another form of wood with a sharpened tool. The Romans later perfected the machine by turning the bow. Later in the Middle ages a pedal replaced the rotating bow and allowed one person to operate the lathe, the pedal is still used to some extent in third world countries.

Machines have continued to evolve over the centuries using animal power, water power, steam power and electricity. Today we are fortunate to have a variety of variable speed lathes and sizes, from small bench lathes for large machines that will turn objects up to 24″ in diameter and larger, but used, as a rule, for commercial application.

When I mentioned the size of the lathe is to say as the 14 inch does not mean that 7 inches between the center of the head stock and lathe bed of or processes; 14 inches is the maximum diameter.

Tools for working wood lathe, a lot, but they are divided into six groups tool. They are chisel, scraper, skew, parting tools, special tools and precision carbide tools. The numbers of these tools is greatly enhanced when you are considering different sizes like thickness, width and length. Many different profiles and shapes, which will also increase the number of tools. After a few years it is easy to have 20 or 30 different instruments.

ChiselsThere are several forms of the profile that have a specific purpose. The spindle gouge is used to form a square wood into round spindles and because of its high side, it should never be used on bowls. Bowl sensors have different profiles, which makes the bowl gouges are very versatile and are great tools. Detail gouges have their purpose. Chisels require practice to understand the various methods to use and how to sharpen the tool. If you take the time to learn to use the bowl gauge you will never not have one in their Toolbox.

ScrapersUsed to smooth out your rotation correctly sharpened they are very good. Many experienced turners to leave burrs on the edge, this may cause the scraper to cut very thin.

DistortsHave double edge bevel and, as a rule, are formed at approximately 30 degrees. Double bevel edge of the cutter can be inverted and used as left and right, some have a rounded edge. The bias can be used for smoothing and special angels.

Tools Of Separation: Used for cutting (removal) turning with a waste block. There are some other limited application.

Special Tools: There are texturing tools, chatter Tools, Chinese ball tools, etc.

Carbide Tools: Get a lot of use because of its hardness and ability to retain shape for longer. Carbide cutter attached to the tool shank, which can only be used for this purpose. Various shapes, cups, flat round, square, rhombus, etc. They are good tools and have their place in tool wood Turner’s chest. The only drawback is the cost of replacement cutters.

Beginning Turners can buy toolboxes in a number of different sizes depending on the size of the machine. Sets are one of each of the tools described above, with the exception of specialty and carbide tools. I hope that this article will help those who are just learning this wonderful craft.
